A bit about bridges

dental bridge

When you have a series of teeth that are damaged, missing or severely impacted by decay, bridges might be the recommended course of action.

Bridges comprise one or multiple false teeth that are designed to replicate the look and function of real teeth. They are affixed to crowns which are placed over healthy existing teeth on either side of the gap and are utilised to maintain the appearance of a natural smile, whilst also ensuring basic functions like chewing and speech are retained.

So, when might bridges be required and what is the process involved?

When bridges are required

Bridges are a common dental treatment which is designed to maintain the natural bite and look of teeth when one or more than one tooth is missing.

Their role is to ensure there are no unsightly gaps between teeth, and also to retain the natural function of the teeth when it comes to eating and speech.

If you are missing a tooth or more than one tooth in a specific area of your mouth, bridges are one of the treatment options recommended to:

  • Improve appearance
  • Improve function (chewing and speech)
  • Prevent teeth moving
  • Prevent damage and stress to the surrounding teeth.

How bridges work

Bridges involve the creation of false teeth that are anchored to crowns which are fitted over the healthy remaining teeth on either side of the gap.

They can be used to replace one or more missing teeth, and are usually made of porcelain or metal, or a mixture of the two.

The procedure

To create a bridge, we file down the two healthy existing teeth on either side of the gap. Crowns are then created to cover these remaining teeth, and a false tooth or teeth that will replicate your former teeth is positioned within the gap.

In some cases, you will be given a temporary bridge while your permanent bridge is prepared, but the ultimate result is teeth that look and behave just as your natural teeth would.

Caring for bridges

When cared for properly, bridges and crowns can last a lifetime. They do not decay like normal teeth might, but the teeth surrounding them will require careful attention to ensure they continue to support this new structure. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice daily assists, as do regular dentist check-ups.

Why bridges are important

Bridges help maintain the space that used to be occupied by natural teeth and this has benefits for both the look and function of the jaw.

Alternatives

The most common alternatives to bridges are permanent dental implants, or removable false teeth. A dentist is the best person to speak to in order to ascertain the best option for you.
