How to Get Healthy Gums

Practicing oral hygiene to have healthy gums and teeth is a must. And if you want to avoid oral health problems, such as gum disease, you should know what you have to do for proper maintenance.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is when plaque and tartar build-up on your gums. These substances are filled with bacteria, which cause infections leading to the said disease and also decaying of the teeth. It has three stages:

 1) Gingivitis is the early stage. This is where the gums are tender, red, swollen and bleed easily. It can be treated with brushing and flossing if caught early on.

2) Mild to moderate periodontitis is the next stage, and this is where there are more inflammation and bleeding around the tooth. It then may cause your gums to pull away from your teeth.

3) Advanced periodontitis is where the gum disease has really worsened. The gums also pull away from the tooth and, there is more destruction of the bone that holds the teeth. Thus, causing them to become so loose that they have to be removed.

So, how can you prevent all of those from happening?

Here are some ways you can maintain your healthy gums:

  •  Avoid sugary treats and eat the right food.

Regularly eating sweets is not that good for our oral health because sugar tends to stay on your mouth for hours. So, it is better for you to eat food like apples, for example. Apples help remove plaque on your teeth and gum line.

  • Never forget to brush your teeth.

This is the basic rule when it comes to oral hygiene. It is best to brush at least twice a day and to use the right toothpaste. It must be approved, and it must contain fluoride. You must also replace your toothbrush every three to four months.

  • Floss since it helps remove plaque and bits of food that your toothbrush won’t be able to reach.

Daily flossing will help prevent bacteria from building up.

  •  Use mouthwash.

Aside from giving you fresh breath, it also helps reduce plaque and lowers your chance of getting gingivitis.

  •  Get your teeth cleaned at the dentist.

Dentists will be able to prevent gum disease from happening. If you regularly visit them, they will detect the symptoms and treat it before it worsens. The only way you can also remove tartar is through professional cleaning. So, if you want a thorough cleaning, you should get the help of a professional.
