Dentures or dental implants?

If you have missing teeth there are a range of options available when it comes to reinstating a healthy smile, and among the top choices are dentures and dental implants.

But which option suits what situation, and how do you know what’s right for you?

Here’s a quick guide to the important factors you need to understand when considering dentures or dental implants.

Dentures

In short, dentures are removable appliances, which are custom-made to fit into the mouth over the gums. They then feature false teeth which are designed to resemble the look and function of real teeth.

Dentures can be used to replace an entire set of teeth or partial dentures are also available. Full dentures can also be further secured using denture adhesive, while partial dentures are affixed to the teeth either side of a gap, using metal wires.

Dentures have come a long way in the past 20 years. They are now more comfortable, more natural looking and offer a better fit than in years gone by.

They have a general lifespan of seven to 15 years, when they might need to be replaced due to changes in the facial shape and bone structure.

Denture care

Dentures are generally removed for cleaning, and they require a specific cleaning routine to keep them free of stains and looking their best.

They should be gently brushed after removal once daily, and then be soaked in water so they remain moist overnight.

Meanwhile, people who wear dentures should also gently brush or rub gauze over the gums, tongue, palate and inner cheeks, being careful to remove any remaining adhesive.

Dental implants

In contrast to dentures which are regularly removed, dental implants offer a permanent solution to missing teeth. Fitting dental implants involves implanting a fine surgical steel rod into the jawbone as a replacement for the root of the lost tooth.

Once healing is complete, which usually takes between four and six months, a crown or bridge is attached to the titanium rod, restoring the look of natural teeth.

These bridges or crowns then act is the same way as normal teeth allowing you to chew and speak just as you would with real teeth.

It’s important to note, not all patients are suitable candidates for dental implants. Oral health, general health and the length of time the teeth have been missing are all factors in determining a patient’s suitability for dental implants.

Caring for dental implants

Caring for dental implants is much like caring for natural teeth and, when looked after properly, implants, bridges and crowns can last a lifetime.

They do not decay like normal teeth might, but the teeth surrounding them will require careful attention to ensure they continue to support this new structure. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice daily assists, as do regular dentist check-ups.
