Simple dental tips for seniors

Good oral care is vital for people of all ages, but as we get older it matters even more.

Like all areas of the body, aging effects your dental health in a number of ways. But the good news is, maintaining a great smile when we reach senior status is simple, with just a couple of extra areas to pay additional attention to.

Here are some simple dental tips for seniors…

Keep up the hygiene routine

Regardless of your age, a diligent dental hygiene routine is essential, and that means brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice daily in addition to flossing.

Flossing is particularly important because research indicates our jaws get smaller as we age, and teeth might become slightly more crowded.

If you have dentures, they will also require daily cleaning. You should follow your dentist’s instructions when cleaning dentures, but generally it involves cleaning them thoroughly to remove all plaque and food debris using a denture brush or toothbrush and mild soap and water.

Don’t forget to store your dentures in a container of water overnight.

Meanwhile, if issues like arthritis make brushing a little more challenging try opting for a longer or wider handled toothbrush, or alternatively look to an electric toothbrush.

Stay hydrated

As we age, we become more prone to dry mouth, which can impact the pH balance of the oral environment and mean we are more prone to decay.

The best way to combat dry mouth is to keep up your water intake during the day, and perhaps consider chewing sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production.

Maintain a healthy diet

A healthy diet remains important throughout your senior years. Keep up that intake of the top five food groups, paying particular attention to fresh fruit and vegetables, along with grains, cereals, dairy, lean meat, fish and eggs.

Watch for gum disease

When cleaning your teeth, ensure you pay adequate attention to the gum line. As we age, we become more prone to gum disease, which sees the gums become inflamed.

Ultimately gum disease can make people more prone to tooth loss.

Be aware of your medications

Medications can impact teeth in a variety of ways. In some cases, it can make you more prone to dry mouth, while other medications may contain sugar.

Let your dentist know when you start taking a new medication so they can offer advice on any precautions you may need to take to protect your teeth.

Visit your dentist regularly

In order to maintain good oral health, it’s vital you visit your dentist regularly. In general, you should see your dentist at least once a year to stay on top of any potential issues. In some cases, you may be advised to visit at more regular intervals.
