Since childhood, we’re no strangers to toothaches thanks to sweets and chocolates. For a lot of us, our parents reminded us to brush our teeth time and time again. Otherwise, we get bad cavities.
Regular visits to the dentists and professional cleans are the most effective preventive measures that can help treat cavities or keep them from coming.
What are dental fillings?
Dental or cavity fillings are used to protect the affected tooth from further decay. If your tooth has a cavity and it remains unfilled, it’s condition will worsen until it leads to bone loss and tooth extraction.
What will the procedure be like?
Dentists will look at your X-rays first and talk you through the dental work needed. The procedure will then start by numbing your teeth and gums so you don’t feel uncomfortable during the process. The next step is to gently drill out the decay and finally to replace it with a filling. Getting a filling a fairly short procedure so you won’t have to worry about extensive down-time.
There are different types of fillings offering different effects and looks, such as:
- Composite Fillings also known as resin fillings. These are a combination of glass or quartz filler. They are durable and can be created to match the color of your teeth. They suitable for small-to-mid-sized restorations.
- Amalgam fillings are one of the most common and oldest form of fillings. They are the cheapest option and very durable. They are usually used for filling cavities in the back of the mouth. They are made of a combination of many metallic elements, so they are visible when you smile or laugh.
- Glass Ionomer Fillings are a combination of acrylic and glass. They release fluoride that helps protect your teeth. But, the downside would be that it is less durable than the others and needs to be replaced at least every five years. Suitable for a short term solution.
- Ceramic Fillings are usually made of porcelain. They can be made to match the color of your teeth just like composite fillings. But, they are less likely to be stained than the latter. Also, this type of filling is the most expensive of the bunch.
