So, what exactly is a crown, how do they work and when are they used?
When we use crowns
Crowns are considered a viable treatment option when a tooth is significantly decayed, damaged or misshapen, yet a portion of the original tooth remains, or an implant structure is in place.
As their name suggests, they sit over the top of the remaining portion of the tooth or implant and function in the same way as a natural tooth.
A crown might be recommended:
- To cover a root canal treatment
- To prevent further damage to a weakened or fractured tooth
- To replace a filling when there is insufficient tooth remaining to rebuild the filling
- To repair a damaged tooth
- To cap off an implant
Crowns can be applied to the front teeth or the molars and are a way to successfully restore the strength and function of a tooth while aesthetically enhancing your smile.
What are crowns made of?
There are several common materials used to manufacture crowns, including porcelain, ceramic, stainless steel and metal alloys. At Brite Dental, we favour the use of ceramic crowns as they are strong, long-lasting and are colour-matched to make them virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
What does the procedure involve?
In order to fit a crown, your tooth will need to be prepared. This involves creating a detailed mould of the original tooth, which will be sent to a lab to create a permanent crown. In the meantime, a layer of your original tooth’s exterior will be removed, and a temporary crown may be fitted.
Once your permanent crown is ready, a further visit to the dentist will be required. At this appointment your permanent crown will be adhered to your remaining original tooth or implant using dental cement and adhesive.
Why not just remove the tooth?
One major benefit of crowns is that they maintain the position and function of a natural tooth. When teeth are lost or removed, it places additional strain on surrounding teeth and also often sees teeth shift out of alignment.
Caring for your crown
When they are well cared for, crowns can last a lifetime, however they do sometimes come loose or fall off.
Meanwhile, it pays to be mindful, while the crown itself is not subject to decay, the remaining part of the tooth can be. The best way to ensure the longevity of your crown and to protect the tooth beneath it is to properly brush twice daily using fluoride toothpaste, and to schedule regular dental checkups.
